Medicare and Medicaid are government payers (cms.gov) and should be billed electronically, both as primary and secondary claims. Medicare is the primary insurance, except when people are working and have coverage through their employer or are being treated as the result of an injury.
When people turn 65, they are eligible for Medicare. Medicare has three parts: Part A is hospitalization coverage. Part B is offices that coverage. Part D is prescription coverage. Part A is automatic. Parts B and D are optional and will be subject to an extra premium. There are also circumstances when a contributor to Social Security dies and leaves dependent and underage children. They may be eligible for Medicare as they receive Social Security benefits.
Medicaid is the always the insurance of last resort. People who are on ADC (aid to dependent children) receive Medicaid. If there is another insurance available, it would be primary and Medicaid would be secondary. There are also low income people who are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
